This installment will cover workers’ compensation updates, legal news, and a Q&A session. Preston J. Garvin is an attorney in the Ohio workers’ compensation sector and a regular speaker for the Ohio Bar Association, the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, the Ohio Self-Insurers Association and various other groups. After beginning his career at the Ohio Industrial Commission as Legal Director (chief legal advisor) to the Ohio Industrial Commission, Preston went to Squire, Sanders & Dempsey, and in 1997, he and Mike Hickey formed Garvin & Hickey, LLC, which is dedicated exclusively to representing employers in all matters related to workers’ compensation. Preston is Special Counsel to the Ohio Chamber of Commerce for workers’ compensation matters and has been appointed by multiple Ohio governors for prestigious roles such as the Workers’ Compensation Task Force and the Executive Order of the Ohio Commodores, “in recognition for outstanding contributions to the economic development of the State of Ohio. Appointed by Governor Kasich in 2013, it is considered Ohio’s ‘most distinguished honor.’ He has testified before various House and Senate committees on numerous workers’ compensation and intentional tort bills and continues to serve as a member of the standing committee to review Industrial Commission rules. Preston also serves on the Board of Directors of Kids Chance of America and the board of Kids Chance of Ohio. It is the mission of Kids Chance of Ohio to provide financial support to further the education of children of Ohio workers who have been killed or declared permanently and totally disabled as a result of workplace injuries. Preston has received the Patrick J. O’Neill award, and Best Lawyers in America named him “Lawyer of the Year” in 2014, for Workers’ Compensation Law – Employers, in the Columbus, Ohio metropolitan area. February 2021: Medical Canvassing Seminar with Jim Anderson of InfoQuest

Medical canvassing is an important step in the claim handling process. The investigation may be able to determine if the employee has had any undisclosed medical treatments before their date of injury. 
This presentation will discuss the medical canvassing process including what information can be obtained without a release and the value of Medical Canvassing.
  
Jim Anderson is a founding partner and President of Infoquest Information Services, Ltd. established in 1994. Infoquest provides investigative and information services to insurers, third-party administrators, employers, and agencies. Formerly, Mr. Anderson was the Claim Director and with Equifax Information Services.   He received his BA in Criminology and Criminal Justice from The Ohio State University.  He is a frequent speaker to many insurance groups throughout Ohio.

November 2020: Self-Insurance Seminar with David Boyd of the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation

This segment will be presented by David Boyd, the Director of Self-Insurance at the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation. David will be providing an overview of the Self-Insurers division. A Q&A will be available at the end of the presentation.

David Boyd is the Director of Self-Insured Operations at the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation. As Director of Self-Insurance, Boyd oversees 1,160 Ohio employers who self-administer a workers’ compensation program. He and his staff ensure these employers adhere to underwriting, financial, and claim administration requirements, among other duties.

Boyd holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a focus in Finance from The Ohio State University. His skills include client relations, account and relationship management, and extensive experience in the insurance industry.
